Tips for Runners and Spectators

For Runners

  • Weather: Expect average late-November temperatures between 9°C and 12°C (48–54°F), with possible light rain. Layered, moisture-wicking clothing and windproof options are advisable.
  • Pacing: The route is fast and flat, popular with PB seekers. However, multiple sharp turns and occasional cobbles require attention to pace strategy, especially through the historic centre.
  • Finishing Time Limit: There is a six-hour cut-off. Free pacers are provided at various finish target times (2h55 through to 5h30), denoted by balloons at the start line.
  • Facilities: Bag drop and changing facilities at Santa Maria Novella station serve post-race needs; shuttle buses operate for non-finishers or early withdrawals.

For Spectators

Spectators can follow the race easily on foot, thanks to Florence’s compact city centre. The best vantage points include Piazza della Repubblica, the Lungarno, and the final stretch near Santa Croce. Arrive early for the best views, and consider booking a table with outdoor seating for a relaxed watching experience.

Where to Stay and Eat

Runners looking for premium accommodation will find the historic centre the most practical base. Staying within walking distance of the start and finish lines (Piazza Duomo and Piazza Santa Croce) ensures logistical ease on race day. This area also provides quick access to Florence’s cultural landmarks, making it ideal for post-race relaxation.

Dining in Florence caters to all tastes and budgets. For traditional Tuscan fare in a relaxed setting, Trattoria Mario offers hearty plates of Florentine steak and ribollita, a classic Tuscan soup. Just across the street, in the Mercato Centrale in San Lorenzo, you’ll find a bustling indoor market filled with food stalls and wine counters—perfect for carb-loading or recovery meals.

Those after a more refined experience can book a table at B-Roof, which overlooks Piazza dell’Unità Italiana. It’s known for its mix of Tuscan and Mediterranean cuisine. And if you’re treating yourself post-race, Santa Elisabetta is a two-Michelin-starred restaurant on the first-floor of the Torre della Pagliazza. Could there be a more fitting way to toast your achievement?

What Else to See in Florence

Even if you’re here for the Florence Marathon, the city’s cultural and historic attractions are too exceptional to miss. Explore world-class art galleries like the Uffizi Gallery or Accademia, stroll through the tranquil Boboli Gardens, or take a walk across the legendary Florence bridges like Ponte Vecchio.

For a more local feel, spend time in the Oltrarno district. This is where artisans still work in traditional studios, independent cafés serve strong espresso without fanfare, and you can see a more lived-in side of Florence that’s no less beautiful than the postcard-perfect centre. After the adrenaline of the marathon, a quiet walk through these cobbled streets is a welcome contrast.

And finally, if you’re looking to mark the occasion with something celebratory (and if you still have fuel in the tank), climb the Duomo’s dome or Giotto’s Bell Tower. The views from the top are worth every step, even after a marathon.
